College Day is a program that works with local schools and districts to promote a college-going culture among students. Since 2010, its mission has been to inspire and support students in pursuit of a college education, particularly those from lower income communities and who would be first-generation college attendees. It is region-wide; spanning elementary, middle, and high schools across Santa Clara County. This year, 180 schools will participate, reaching a record-high of 120,000 students.
While the main focus is on College Day (this year: October 19th ), schools are encouraged to carry out week-long college awareness and preparation activities in classrooms and through assemblies. Teachers and administrators can download suggested age-appropriate activities and lesson plans from the College Day website. Current college students and community members volunteer and are matched to classrooms to share their paths to college and discuss the importance of post-secondary education.
