6th Annual Pioneers & Purpose Event Highlights

Pioneers & Purpose honoring John W. Thompson was a wonderful success thanks to our many friends in the business, civic, and education communities who came together to support public education. We are grateful to our 63 sponsors, to the 103 represented companies, and to the 91 individuals who made donations during the Fund-A-Need portion of the program.

A record 612 were on hand to hear John W. Thompson share his vision on the role of corporations in enabling change for our students - as a community, together, we are making a difference!

Visit our website or Facebook Fan Page to see more photos and videos of the event. We hope to see you at Pioneers & Purpose 2011!

Event Wrap Up - Education Forum: The Future Is Green

SUTA/MAP Celebration

The Future Is Green

More than 90 educators, business leaders and green advocates turned out for a forum at San Jose's Tech Museum June 21 to talk about preparing our students with skills they'll need to enter future solar and other green careers. Several Santa Clara County school districts - San Jose Unified, East Side Union High School and Franklin-McKinley - have green technology programs, but more schools need to develop them. Keynote speaker for the forum was Thomas H. Werner, CEO of SunPower, followed by panelists Alana Conner, VP of Content Development at the Tech; Dr. Charles Weis, Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools, and Alyssa Newman, Manager of Corporate Sustainability at the SunPower Foundation.

We invite you to visit our website to see photos and download the PowerPoint presentation from this event.

"Signing up was easy, and I'm happy to help make a difference every month."

"For a little more than one fancy espresso drink, I'm able to contribute to the programs that serve students across Silicon Valley. That's a win-win in my book."

Lessonopoly Update

NASA Smart Skies

We've formed a new collaboration with NASA Ames to increase interest and capabilities in science and math.

On June 1st we kicked off our partnership by taking twenty seventh grade students from the ACE Charter School in San Jose to NASA Ames to learn about air traffic control. They each had the opportunity to work with the "Smart Skies" software and interact with air traffic controllers.

All these materials are available to you on Lessonopoly to use in your own classroom. There are lesson plans for the two programs, LineUp with Math and FlyBy Math, which demonstrate real-life applications of mathematics using air traffic control and includes an online web-based air traffic control simulator. These activities are appropriate for grades 5-9.

To access these fun and interactive lesson plans visit Lessonopoly.org. To learn more about this event or to view a photo gallery click here.
