Making a Difference… One Student at a Time

Dear friend,

This has been an exciting, and challenging, year for education. What keeps me going is the personal stories of students whose lives – and futures – are changed by participating in our programs. I'd like you to meet Xavier, a 7th grade student who struggled in math, but was able to turn that around during our Stepping Up To Algebra program:

Xavier Edwards

"I never liked math, I always got bad grades, until I got into Stepping Up To Algebra. My teacher made me feel like I could be successful in math and that I was good enough to go to college. The field trip to San Jose State and the engineering department was great, and made me start thinking about college. Now I want to be an engineer."

Is there anything more satisfying than hearing word like that from a student? Can you help us put 100 more students like Xavier through our Stepping Up To Algebra program? With the support of individuals like you, we can continue to offer these innovative, and life changing, programs to students. I hope you can offer your support – even if it's only $5/month. It helps Silicon Valley Education Foundation make a difference… one student at a time.

Sincerely,

Muhammed Chaudhry

Congratulations to ESUHSD on Passing A to G

Upcoming Events

A to G

Silicon Valley Education Foundation congratulates East Side Union High School District, Superintendent Dan Moser, and the Board of Trustees for taking the bold action on November 18th's board meeting to raise curriculum standards for graduation. By adopting "A to G" courses as the standard curriculum, students will have more options and be more prepared as they move into college and careers. We view this decision as a huge win for students – and are pleased to be working alongside teachers and administrators to improve education for all students.

Waiting for Superman Panel Discussion

If you've seen the movie "Waiting for Superman," you probably have an opinion about how to best solve the problems faced by our students. The purpose of the forum is to allow for a public discussion from different perspectives on what the movie purports to say and whether that point of view is warranted. Although Silicon Valley Education Foundation does not take a position when we present forums, we are interested in looking at the complex issues raised in the movie. Are teachers' unions the problem? Are charter schools the solution?

You won't want to miss this conversation on how to best solve this issue. Admission is free. Visit our website for more details and to RSVP.

Time to Act: Closing the Racial Achievement Gap

On November 10, 2010, over 140 educators, policymakers, community, and business leaders from around Silicon Valley gathered at East Side Union High School District's office in San Jose to listen from experts about our specific recommendations presented in the policy brief we recently published in partnership with Silicon Valley Community Foundation.

Congressman Mike Honda was the keynote speaker. The panel was formed by Fred Jones, Fresno State professor Kenneth R. Magdaleno, Superintendent Vincent Matthews, and Stanford's dean of education Deborah Stipek. San Jose Mercury News' Editor Barbara Marshman moderated the panel.

If you missed this great education forum, we invite you to visit our website to download the program and to see photos. A video of this forum will be available online in the next few days. It will also be televized on CreaTV San Jose in the next few days.
