Michelle Lagunes is passionate about math - “I love math. It’s fun, and it will help me when I grow up in whatever I want to be.” But she admitted she occasionally struggles with math problems, so Michelle was anxious to enroll in the Stepping Up to Algebra summer program at San Jose’s Hoover Middle School. “The class was good because it helped me for next year. I’ll know more, and I can help my classmates!”
Also enthusiastic about her progress is her father, Enrique Lagunes. “Last year her scores were low, and they have increased, so I’m very happy.”
Michelle’s older sister will be the first in the family to go to college, and Michelle hopes to follow in her footsteps. Michelle wants to become a teacher so she can help others. “I really want to go to Princeton [University] or Stanford [University],” she says. Her father is ecstatic about her goals. “I’m very happy she’d like to go to college. She’s very motivated and I’m excited for her.”
