Stepping Up To Algebra

Gaining Momentum in Math

SUTAJacob Melius enrolled in Stepping Up to Algebra (SUTA) through his math teacher’s recommendation. Jacob had struggled to keep up with his classmates after moving from Pennsylvania, where students studied algebra at a slower pace. “I really couldn’t understand the lessons, but I didn’t want to ask questions because I’m not used to asking teachers for help,” Jacob said.

But Jacob quickly gained momentum as a result of the one-on-one guidance he received from his SUTA teacher and teaching assistant. Jacob’s mother, Rusty Melius, said, “[The class] was small enough that [the teacher] could give individual help, and they made it fun so that he didn’t feel shy about raising his hand and asking for help. There was kinship between the teacher and students that they don’t have in regular school.” The Khan Academy computer program also played a significant role in his progress.

Jacob plans to go to college to study architecture and knows he needs to be a strong math student to be an architect.
