Stepping Up To Algebra

A Turnaround in Attitude Towards Algebra

SUTA“Before I started Stepping Up to Algebra I did not like algebra,” said Concepción Vasquez, 13, an incoming eighth grader who plans to attend Campbell Middle School. “I thought it was too hard. I didn’t understand it, I did not do well in math and I had no confidence in myself as a math student.”

Concepción told her parents that she wanted to spend her summer going swimming with her friends and visiting the mall -- not being stuck in a classroom for four hours a day studying math.

However, once she entered the SUTA class led by teacher Viviana Medina, she started to feel more positive about math. “My teacher took time with me to explain everything. That made a difference. Now I feel like algebra is very easy. I feel good about what I’ve learned, and I think I’ll do well in algebra in eighth grade.”
