Stepping Up To Algebra

Struggling Student Leaps to Math Success through Individual Attention

SUTA“I wanted to come to this class because I want to get smarter in math,” said 13-year-old Anastasia Vasquez, who will be an eighth grade student at Monroe Middle School. Before enrolling in Stepping Up to Algebra (SUTA), she was not a strong student, earning a D in seventh grade math. The large math class at her middle school made it nearly impossible to get individual attention when she got stuck on a problem.

“I’m not good at learning by just listening to the teacher lecture in front of the class,” she said. “I like to work out the problems myself, then I can see how you get to the answers. I didn’t get much help before, but with the smaller class in summer school, everybody gets a chance to have their questions answered.”

Anastasia’s teacher said she is one of the SUTA program’s true success stories. She started out with very poor test scores, then took a giant leap ahead by the end of the four weeks. Now she is brimming with math confidence.
