Alex Peña had trouble understanding math because he felt his teacher moved too quickly in covering the basic concepts. This summer he was offered the chance to attend Stepping Up to Algebra, a 19-day summer math program, to prepare for success in Algebra I in eighth grade.
While Alex was reluctant to attend, his mother said that after the first week he was excited to go to class because he knew he would get help and get better at math. Alex liked the math games his teacher used to supplement classroom instruction. Alex found that the Khan Academy educational videos let him learn at his own pace.
Alex’s older brother inspires him to succeed in high school. Alex wants to attend San Jose State University to pursue a career in engineering.
