Del Mar High School’s integrated math and science summer program has made a world of difference in preparing student Patience Saplah for ninth grade. She had always felt unsure about her ability in both math and science, but within the thirteen days of the Stepping Up to Science (STEPS) program, Patience has become much more confident in both subjects and is ready to tackle Geometry and Physics. “When I start the school year, I can do better than I was doing last year,” she said with confidence.
Barely out of middle school, she has already established ambitious goals for her future. Patience has her sights set on attending UCLA and would like to pursue either being a fashion designer or a lawyer specializing in cases involving juveniles.
Patience and her family immigrated to the U.S. from Liberia, Africa. Despite their financial struggles, Patience hopes to rise above the challenge by saving up her money, getting a job and applying for scholarships in order to make her dreams a reality. “I will work my hardest. I want to make my family proud,” she said.
