Stepping Up To Science

Aspiring Science Educator Plans to Pursue Multiple Careers

SUTALuis Patiño, an incoming ninth grader, was one of the students who participated in the first Stepping Up to Science (STEPS) program at Del Mar High School in San Jose. Luis was quick to note that math wasn’t his strongest subject, although he had always loved science.

Since attending the STEPS program, his attitude has completely changed. The math portion of the curriculum focused on helping students like Luis review critical Algebra I concepts so they are prepared for ninth grade Geometry. Luis and his classmates benefited significantly from math teacher Anne Hefflinger’s method of explaining algebra concepts step by step.

Because of the boost in confidence Luis has experienced from STEPS, he has chosen to take Geometry and Honors Physics this fall. “I already have my high school planned out, because I really want to go to Stanford [University],” he said. When asked what he wants to study, Luis enthusiastically said, “I actually want to have three or four careers!” He is looking forward to pursuing astronomy, geology and cosmetology, as well as becoming a science teacher. Luis hopes to be a role model for his four younger siblings by being the first in his family to go to college.
