Daisy Tamayo, who will enter ninth grade this fall, did not like science. She thought it was too difficult to understand. She had not been exposed to science curriculum for many years, so she feared it would be a foreign world. “But after I got into Mr. Cheadle’s biology class this summer, I really liked it,” she said. “It wasn’t strange. He made it fun. I liked going to the creek and getting water samples and looking at the live creatures under a microscope.”
The course that introduces incoming ninth graders to biology is the first exposure many students in the program will have to a science lab class since their elementary school days.
Daisy also enjoyed learning about solar energy and new ways to generate power that help reduce impacts on the environment. “This program taught me a lot. I guess I’m a science kid now,” she said, laughing. Daisy says she plans to go to college and pursue a career working for NASA.
