Stepping Up To Science

Hands-on Science Energizes Future Marine Biologist

SUTAChristian Lopez, 14, had always loved science, but the subject was not offered at his middle school so he hadn’t had the chance to take it in school for three years.

As soon as he started the Stepping Up to Science program at James Lick High School this summer, it re-ignited his passion for science and studying about sea creatures. “It’s a lot more exciting than I thought it would be. I love the hands-on stuff,” he said. “I loved learning how to make slides of things and looking under the microscope. We took a strawberry and smashed it, then made a slide and looked at its DNA with the microscope.”

The class excited Christian about science so much that he told his parents he wants to attend college in the future and become a marine biologist. He’s looking forward to taking Biology in the fall in high school. “I know it’s going to be my favorite class.”
