Stepping Up To Science

Students Take A Giant Leap in Science Comprehension

SUTATeacher Adam Cheadle is one of the biggest cheerleaders for Stepping Up to Science. The program, he says, is an excellent introduction to Biology I for students who struggle academically, giving them a leg up in the subject right before they enter high school.

“The course is a great way to open the door to students to study and participate in the world around them,” he said. “Students were challenged to push themselves to learn this curriculum when they’ve hardly had any science at all over the last few years. They really engaged in the material. They learned to make their own hypotheses and draw conclusions. They learned why it’s important to study and understand science - because it’s all around us.”

Cheadle said 80% of his students took a giant leap in their comprehension of science by the end of the course’s four weeks. “Their growth was astonishing. They learned they can take on science. And many of them now see college in their future.”
