Silicon Valley Education Foundation’s Stepping Stones to Kindergarten (SSTK) initiative seeks to raise school readiness awareness and provide resources to families with children ages 0 to 5 years to better prepare them for the start of kindergarten. By utilizing the “Promotores de Salud” awareness model, SSTK provides families with an informal and interactive forum to discuss the challenges children face in beginning their academic lives, and the strategies parents and guardians can take early on to circumvent those challenges.
SSTK gives parents an overview of the building blocks of school readiness: early academics, social and emotional development, language development and physical well-being and motor skills. During the overview, in addition to learning about each building block, parents are given activities that they can do at home with their children to build skill levels within each of those building blocks. Interested parents can request additional sessions for a more in-depth understanding of the building blocks. SSTK facilitators also direct parents to locations where they can sign their children up for pre-school and kindergarten and encourage parents’ engagement in their children’s education throughout their pre K – 12 experiences.
Nearly half of children entering Kindergarten in Santa Clara County are not school ready.
