Young Reader Future Leader - Community Organizations
Community based organizations with a literacy component or focus:
Bring me a Book Foundation: Bring me a Book Foundation partners with the community to assess where their books and services are needed most. Through three programs, Bookcase Library, First Teacher and the Bookbag Library, BMABF distributes books and knowledge to teachers and parents to encourage early literacy.
Children’s Discovery Museum : The purpose of Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose is to serve the needs of children, families and schools as a center for learning and discovery. For children, it is first and foremost a place to call their own, offering interactive exhibits and programs in a warm and inviting setting. Its educational mission encompasses the themes of Connections, Community, and Creativity. In its unique environment, children actively make connections among ideas, people and cultures. The programs at Museum also encourage children to define their role in and contribution to both local and global communities. Finally, as a center for creative play and expression, Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose provides opportunities for all of us to discover the world through the eyes of our children.
First 5 Kids : Based on sound research in early child development, FIRST 5 Santa Clara County supports the healthy growth and nurturing of children prenatal through age 5. By working with parents, community leaders, social service and healthcare agencies, FIRST 5 funds and sponsors essential services for young children and their families. We are a voice and an advocate for young children and their families, investing more than $30 million of Proposition 10 tobacco tax money each year in Santa Clara County to support critical issues.
GoKids: Go Kids child care centers incorporate an integrated thematic based curriculum into a learning center environment. Our philosophy is based on the Developmentally Appropriate Practices model developed by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. While respecting the parent’s role as primary caregiver, teaching staff and providers work closely with parents to educate and support learning through play. We believe children learn through experiences that are fun, stimulating, and challenging. Children are provided meaningful opportunities to prepare them for school. Examples include large and small group sizes, and cooperative and individual experiences.
Grail Family Services: Grail Family Services fosters learning and the empowerment of vulnerable families with young children through the delivery of programs that educate, develop leadership skills, and build a sense of community. This organization was incorporated in 1995 as a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization to develop affordable housing, a child development center, and a community resource center. Since 2000, the agency has provided family support programs with a focus on family literacy, adult education, and the empowerment of community residents. GFS is recognized as an incubator of high quality, community-focused, result-oriented programs that respond to residents' needs. To strengthen our impact, GFS partners with over 20 organizations to implement programs both on-site and off-site, to refer volunteers, and to conduct program evaluations.
Raising a Reader: The Raising a Reader mission is to foster healthy brain development, parent-child bonding and early literacy skills critical for school success by engaging parents in a routine of daily “book cuddling” with their children from birth to age five. This mission addresses a national need for effective early literacy programs. One in three children entering kindergarten lacks basic pre-reading skills, which are proven to be a key factor in determining high-school graduation and lifelong success.
Reach out and Read: Reach Out and Read (ROR) is a national non-profit organization that promotes early literacy by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud in pediatric exam rooms across the nation. Doctors and nurses know that growing up healthy means growing up with books. The ROR program provides the tools to help promote children's developmental skills and later school success.
