California has a wide variety of public institutions available to students. With 23 California state universities (CSU) and 10 University of California (UC) campuses, you have many options available to you. The University of California, as mandated by the California Master Plan for Higher Education, accepts the top 12.5% of high school graduates, while the CSU system accepts the top one-third of high school graduates.
A-G refers to high school courses required for entrance to the UC and CSU systems. They are called this because there are seven general subject areas labeled “A” through “G”.

Important! You must earn a C or better on your A-G courses to receive credit. You will also need a minimum 2.0 GPA for CSU admission or a minimum 3.0 GPA for UC admission. Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors classes look good on your transcript.

The CSU and UC campuses require you to take tests as a part of the admission requirements. Read on to see which tests you have to take.
1. California State University - SAT or ACT
2. University of California - SAT or ACT; Subject tests are optional, but recommended (at least two tests in two different subjects)
3. Assessment Tests and Exemptions - These vary by institution and applicant.

The University of California application requires applicants to submit two essays. The word limit for both essays is 1,000 words combined.

The CSU and UC applications are accessible as of October 1 and November 1, respectively. Both applications are online and should be submitted well in advance of the due date to ensure it is accepted by the system on time. The application can be worked on over several separate periods of time if saved. Print the application once submitted to keep for your records. SAT/ACT tests should be taken no later than December.
