Women & Girls 2010 Summit - Thriving in the New Economy

On December 2nd, over 100 educators, policymakers, community, and business leaders gathered at The Tech Museum to take part in an interactive forum with the purpose of finding ways to move women into education and training leading to high-wage and non-traditional careers, including science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Speakers included Victoria Plaut of UC Berkeley, Alana Conner of The Tech Museum, Isaura S. Gaeta of Intel, Barbara Kamm of Tech Credit Union, and Alyssa Newman of SunPower Corp. Thank you to all who participated in this important forum to advance the role of women in STEM careers.

In an era when women are increasingly prominent in medicine, law and business, why are there so few women scientists and engineers? A new research report by AAUW, Why So Few? Women in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics presents eight key research findings that point to environmental and social barriers - including stereotypes, gender bias and the climate of science and engineering departments in colleges and universities - that continue to block women's participation and progress in science, technology, engineering, and math.

These environmental and social barriers threaten Silicon Valley's ability to compete and innovate in the future. By 2014, the U.S. will have added more than one million additional information technology jobs to the workforce. However, women still lag far behind in earning computer technology degrees and working in computer and green technology-related professions. During December, the County of Santa Clara and City of San Jose, in partnership with other community partners, will host a regional summit titled "Women and Girls 2010: Thriving in the New Economy" which will provide an opportunity to explore this topic and formulate an action agenda to address gaps and move women into education and training leading to high-wage and non-traditional careers, including science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

In order to close this gap, we must support efforts that train teachers to encourage girls and other underrepresented groups to pursue careers in these fields. Promoting and strengthening science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education is critical, especially for girls and other underrepresented populations. These efforts will help increase Silicon Valley's competitiveness by reducing gender barriers that deter women from pursuing academic and career goals in these fields.
