Community Discussions on
Public Education

The primary objective of the Silicon Valley Education Foundation is to help the Silicon Valley become the number one geographic area in the percentage of high school students academically prepared for college and post secondary success as defined by the successful completion of the University of California/California State University high school coursework often referred to as the A-G requirements. The A-G coursework refers to a specific number and type of high school courses in English, mathematics, science, foreign language and electives.

Many parents, students, and community members are not aware of the A-G requirements and the importance they hold in applying the California university system. Students cannot even apply to the California university system if they have not met the minimum course requirements. Students are not required to take the A-G coursework in all districts, so this means that they need to be vigilant in ensuring that they are enrolled in the correct coursework if they want to ensure that they are in fact taking coursework that would prepare them for college work.

In an effort to educate the community on the importance of the University Course requirements referred to as the A-G requirements, the SVEF held a series of five community forums in the East Side Union High School community. The forums presented information on the A-G coursework, why they are important and how they are used. Participants were then divided into smaller groups to provide their reaction to the information. Comments referred to the importance of continuing to present information to parents and students alike. One group of students in attendance at one of the presentations asked of the information could be presented at a school assembly.

Participants were also asked to react to the possibility that the A-G coursework becoming the default or "automatic" curriculum in the East Side Union High School District. Some concern was expressed about those students who might not be ready to take on a more rigorous A-G curriculum. The default option would allow them to remove students from a class that is too difficult. Furthermore, some students may need additional help to meet more rigorous coursework.

The SVEF will continue to educate the community on the importance of the A-G requirements and advocate that all students have access to the university high school course requirements.
