Teachers
Grants of up to $500 will be awarded to any individual teacher who works in one of the 19 school districts in the city of San Jose. Teachers of any grade level can apply for professional development, purchase of technology or materials or other innovative ideas to be implemented in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to try new ideas and to rethink their teaching practices. Innovation is the key to the Teacher Innovation Grant process. The Silicon Valley Education Foundation wants to encourage teachers to try new teaching and learning techniques. A project is innovative if it tries something which is new to the applying teacher and that teacher’s classroom. Not all innovation involves the use of cutting edge technology—new ways of using older technology often increases student performance. In fact, many previously funded projects did not involve the use of technology at all. It is important that applications include a description of the innovative nature of the project. Often background information on the school and/or students involved is helpful in this description. It is important that project applications demonstrate strong student involvement. Students learn best when they are active learners rather than passive recipients of instruction. If the project is of a professional development nature, there must be a description of how students will directly benefit from the project. In addition it is important that applications include an evaluation process that measures student learning and performance as well as an evaluation of the success of the overall project. The Individual Teacher Grant Application Form is available in MS Word format. It is highly recommended that applicants download this form and fill it out prior to transferring the information to the Online Application Form. It is also recommended that applicants save a copy of the MS Word version of their application. To download a MS Word copy of the application, click here. |
